The nook was extremely tricky to light without casting to bad of a shadow so we used small portable lights to light it just enough with out blowing it out but at the same time keep it dark enough to add to the sadness of the scene.
The second picture is a breakfast bar, but because of the natural lighting coming in from the windows this does not require that much additional lighting, we did however use two portable lights to light the doorway when character walks through. We shot this scene in the kitchen to be able to have the character place the box down cut out of scene-return- then cut away again, also this was done to avoid the viewer to see the unsightly clutter that was in this area that could not be moved.
